The book presents the biology of a medical leech with instructions on the maintenance and breeding of leeches in the German company “Zaug”. Hirudotherapy for vein diseases, arthrosis of joints, rheumatic diseases, for tendovaginitis and tendenosis, for vertebral pain syndromes is discussed in detail. Hirudotherapy for rheumatological diseases is evaluated by the example of 35 years of experience in a rheumatology center. Hirudotherapy in plastic surgery is illustrated. The contraindications of hirudotherapy and undesirable consequences in the treatment of leeches are discussed in detail. A separate chapter is devoted to the bacterial flora of a medical leech.
